On Wednesday, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar announced that he would play mining engineer Jaswant Singh Gill, who in 1989 saved 64 miners from a flooded quarry in West Bengal.
This was the actor’s response to Union coal minister Pralhad Joshi’s tweet honoring Gill on the 33rd anniversary of the nation’s “first coal mine rescue mission.”
“Thank you, @JoshiPralhad ji, for recalling India’s first coal mine rescue operation, 33 years ago today.Being cast as #SardarJaswantSinghGill in a movie is an honor for me.This is a unique tale!On the microblogging website, Akshay wrote, “@easterncoal (sic).”
Gill, who lived in Amritsar, had been recognized for his bravery in 1989 with a number of awards.In the Raniganj region of West Bengal, he had volunteered and saved 64 lives from a flooded mine.At the age of 80, Gill passed away in 2019.
Pooja Entertainment is in charge of producing the untitled Hindi film.The project is said to be in the works to be directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, who also directed “Rustom,” which starred Akshay Kumar.

Earlier this month, Akshay announced that he would portray Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Marathi film “Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat” directed by Mahesh Manjrekar.
