At the box office this weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water has outperformed expectations in a number of ways. One of the movie’s numerous successes this weekend was dominating the international IMAX network. An astounding $48.8M was made by Avatar: The Way of Water on 1,543 screens across 80 countries. The expensive follow-up has shattered the mark for international IMAX premieres and is currently the second highest-grossing IMAX weekend of all time and the biggest IMAX December opening ever. 11.2 percent of people who went to the movies to see Avatar: The Way of Water saw it in IMAX.

Rich Gelfond, the CEO of IMAX, commented on the popularity of the movie and the pleasure of watching Avatar: The Way of Water in IMAX, saying:

Avatar: The Way of Water produced $16.5 million in North America from IMAX alone, which indicates that IMAX ticket sales made up 12.3% of the movie’s domestic weekend gross and generated over $40,000 per screen on average. International IMAX ticket sales have brought in a total of over $32.3 million for the movie. The blockbuster movie had a $15.8 million domestic total from 735 IMAX screens, ranking it as China’s fourth-highest IMAX opening weekend ever. The largest IMAX opening ever in India, Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey, Chile, Czech Republic, Vietnam, New Zealand, Romania, Serbia, and Kazakhstan was achieved by Avatar: The Way of Water.
