For the forthcoming Scream VI, a spectacular new Christmas-themed poster has been presented. The long-running slasher franchise’s sixth film, as we already know, will move the action to New York City, a notable break from the series’ illustrious confinement to the made-up village of Woodsboro. With the critically praised 1996 debut of filmmaker Wes Craven’s Scream, the franchise’s distinctive style of meta-horror was first exposed to viewers. Before Scream, the series’ relaunch, was released last year, Craven returned to helm three additional movies in the franchise.
The initial Scream VI teaser hinted the shift in setting while also calling to mind another slasher film, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. The new poster is more of a remembrance piece and doesn’t include any actual movie imagery. “It’s Scream time in the city,” said the tagline on the poster.
Closer examination of the image, which depicts Times Square but with every billboard bearing the visage of the infamous Ghostface killer, uncovered a few intriguing elements. Blackmore University is a made-up institution that was discovered to exist by fans who came into the movie’s set some time ago, according to a banner that says “Blackmore University” in the bottom left corner of the poster. The new poster’s bottom right corner features a banner that says, “Wrongly Accused: The Musical,” possibly hinting at a new narrative line.
