When Avatar: The Way of Water was revealed, two of the biggest cast-related shocks were that Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang would return to the franchise and not only that, but they would also receive credit in subsequent films. Weaver’s return was somewhat easier to swallow because she would be portraying a different role, but Lang’s general Miles Quaritch would be returning as himself, although in a different guise.
While hunting Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) throughout the sequel, Quaritch (whose retrieved memory is implanted in an Avatar) develops a relationship and a rivalry with his son Spider (Jack Champion), which ultimately inspires the child who was raised among the Na’vi to save his biological father – or his father, at the very least, from drowning. Of course, his survival means that there will be a lot more father-son turmoil to be explored in Avatar 3, but co-screenwriter Amanda Silver said in an interview with Variety that it’s okay if fans were upset that Spider changed his mind:
