Shaunak Sen’s documentary All That Breathes has been nominated for the Documentary Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards. Apart from this, the song Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s RRR has also made it to the nominee list in the Original Song category while the documentary short The Elephant Whisperers has been selected in the Documentary Short Film segment.
All That Breathes will be competing with films like All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Fire of Love, A House Made of Splinters and Navalny.
Grasping for words to express his happiness, Shaunak told Cinema Express, “I am finding it really difficult to say something that doesn’t sound like a cliché.”
“I am filled with joy and at a loss for words. I want to offer my deepest, most heartfelt thanks to our incredible characters and the whole film team. I am grateful to the Academy for recognising their work,” he added.
The film revolves around two brothers and the birds they try to rescue from the smog-filled city of Delhi they live in. The documentary had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2022 in January last year. It bagged the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition.
It was also selected for screening at the Cannes Film Festival, 2022 under the special screening section. It subsequently won the Golden Eye award for best documentary.
