Black Panther by Ryan Coogler:Wakanda Forever has already exceeded $45 million in advance ticket sales at the U.S. box office, and there are still a few days until the highly anticipated sequel from Marvel Studios officially opens in approximately 4,300 theaters domestically.
During Tuesday’s earnings call, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek praised the strength of advance sales.Advance ticket sales demonstrate that “Ryan Coogler has delivered another culture-defining film,” Chapek informed investors.
Wakanda Forever begins its global rollout on Wednesday and will open worldwide by the weekend (excluding China and Russia).The tentpole is expected to open to at least $175 million domestically, with estimates ranging from $185 million to $200 million from exhibitors, and anywhere from $155 million to $195 million internationally.
Wakanda Forever’s advance ticket sales in the United States as of Sunday were $45 million, more than Thor:Disney insiders claim that Love and Thunder is not in front of (frontloaded) Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.Advance ticket sales for Wakanda Forever could reach $60 million to $65 million by Friday, surpassing the $55 million that the first Black Panther made.
Black Panther, the groundbreaking film from Ryan Coogler, made history when it debuted to $202 million domestically over the weekend of February 16-18, 2018.On its way to grossing more than $1.34 billion worldwide at the box office, the film became a cultural phenomenon and became the first Hollywood studio tentpole with a majority Black cast.
When Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed T’Challa/Black Panther in the 2018 film, passed away in August 2020 from colon cancer, the sequel’s journey to the big screen was marred by its own tragedy.Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, Martin Freeman, and Marvel newcomer Tenoch Huerta play Namor and Riri Williams is played by Dominique Thorne.
