According to the Harry & Meghan docuseries on Netflix, British correspondents are more like publicists than actual journalists who cover breaking news. We are all aware of how the tabloid culture relies on sensationalism, picking sides, and the planting of tales. It appears that yellow journalism is promoted widely in Britain, reducing tabloids to little more than a piece of yellow rag.
One of the main themes of the Harry & Meghan presentation was the criticism of the British press, which Harry explicitly states that there are royal journalists in Britain who are more akin to the royal family’s public relations department.
We become aware of how they leak and fabricate stories thanks to the Harry and Meghan docuseries. There is leakage, but there is also story planting, according to Prince Harry. In the documentary series, we see how members of Buckingham Palace and the British press work together to smear Harry and Meghan’s reputations. Harry makes it obvious that if you are a member of the royal rota, you are given priority over the rest of the group while telling the narrative. All royal news is filtered through the newspapers on the royal rota, the most of which, with the exception of the Telegraph, are tabloids.
The docuseries explores Meghan Markle’s past, particularly her connection with her second sister, who she virtually ever met. Harry claims that the royal family failed to support the marriage when Meghan, the first mixed-race member of the current royal family, came under racist criticism and was repeatedly referred to as a “nigger” by the media.
We are astounded by how low the British media could sink to publish Meghan Markle’s letter to her father. The British media revealed the contents of the letter Meghan Markle, who was seven months pregnant, addressed to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, before her wedding.
The five-page letter that the Duchess of Sussex wrote, before her marriage to Prince Harry, revealed that her father’s acts had disappointed her. The letter Meghan wrote that her father broke her heart “into a million pieces” by criticising her marriage to Prince Harry. She also implored him to patch things with her privately.
Indirectly referring to Prince William, Prince Harry said “Some of the members of the family were like, ‘My wife had to go through that, so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently? Why should you get special treatment? Why should she be protected?”
Prince Harry added, “For so many people in the family — especially, obviously, the men — there can be a temptation or an urge to marry someone who would fit the mould as opposed to somebody who you perhaps are destined to be with.”
It’s good to see how Prince Harry and Meghan Marlke stood by each other through the difficult times. Harry clearly said that her mother, Lady Diana had fought all the politics of the royal family all by herself, with no support from any corner except the love of the British public. And that both Harry and Meghan love the British public, but not the British press.
