Over the past ten years, a number of young adult romances have won over readers. But few have undoubtedly been as well-liked or enduring as the After series of movies. After, which is based on the Anna Todd novel series, includes three sequels and was meant to conclude this year with After Ever Happy. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the franchise’s lead, revealed that there will be a fifth film, After Everything, to wrap off the series before that one was even released. Furthermore, it had already been filmed, which was unexpected. The new final movie has now gotten its first teaser trailer ahead of its 2023 premiere.
Although the brief 35-second teaser doesn’t give away much about the movie’s story, it does hint at how Hardin, played by Tiffin, is handling the aftermath from his on-and-off romance with Tessa, played by Josephine Langford. Warning: Hardin is not handling it well. He admits to his parents that he is having difficulty writing and that everything he does is influenced by his love for Tessa. He struggles with the prospect of being apart from her. The last time we see Hardin, he is reserving a one-way trip for himself and his beloved.
Say what you will about the After series, and its arguable promotion of an abusive relationship, this has been one of the most successful franchises in its genre, particularly in the pandemic era. The first film made $69 million worldwide before its sequel After We Collided made $47 million during the pandemic in 2020. Its latter two films, After We Fell and After Ever Happy, both received hybrid releases, but they still managed to make $21 million and $19 million worldwide respectively. Also, these are pretty cheap films to make, so it’s a no-brainer why Voltage Pictures would want to continue this franchise. Let’s just hope the writing this time around is better than the last couple films because the amount of melodrama and needless subplots crammed into this saga would make even the most die-hard hopeless romantics roll their eyes at times. However, with that said, Langford shine’s in this franchise and Tiffin does his best with the repetitive material he’s given.
