The makers of “Kantara,” a historical action thriller directed by Rishab Shetty, announced on Wednesday that the film will become a franchise.
The successful Kannada film, written and directed by Shetty, opened to a roaring reception on September 30.
The film reportedly cost only Rs 16 crore to produce, but it has now grossed more than Rs 500 crore in theatres throughout the world.
Hombale Films founder Vijay Kiragandur stated that the banner is overjoyed with the reception to “Kantara” and that production on “either a prequel or sequel” would soon begin.
“Rishab is abroad, but when he returns, we’ll talk about whether we want to make a prequel or a sequel. In a few months, something will be available. There is no set release date for “Kantara 2,” but we do have ideas for it, Kiragandur told PTI in an interview.
Shetty had already declared his intention to produce a sequel to the popular film.
“Kantara,” which is set in the fictional hamlet of Dakshina Kannada, depicts a Kambala champion who clashes with an honourable Forest Ranger officer, played by Shetty (Kishore).
In the yearly race known as Kambala, which takes place in coastal Karnataka from November to March, a jockey pulls a pair of buffaloes that are hitched to a plough across two parallel muddy courses.
Partner at Hombale Films Chaluve Gowda claims that because the film highlighted the deeply ingrained customs and values that are common in Indian culture, the audience was able to relate to it.
These rites are practised in various ways around the world. Any region of the country might experience what happened in “Kantara.” People associated to “Kantara” in this way. It resonated with people. We aimed to introduce a local topic to a larger audience,” Gowda continued.
“Kantara” was also made available in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. It also featured Achyuth Kumar and Sapthami Gowda in significant parts.
Aside from the viewers, the film received positive reviews on social media from a number of industry figures, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
