There has been no secret made that Warner Bros. have been looking to expand their Lord of the Rings movie franchise and now CEO David Zaslav had revealed that “multiple” new movies based on the stories of Tolkien are now in the works. Deadline reported that director of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy Peter Jackson says both he and his Tolkien writing team have been “kept in the loop” regarding the new movies.

It is over two decades since Peter Jackson did the impossible and brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings to the big screen in a trilogy of live-action movies. While once thought unfilmable for the sheer scale of its story, and the multiple fantastic locations and peoples that would have been impossible to do justice to just several years earlier, Jackson and his team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyes created a cinematic masterpiece that took the world by storm and picked up one or two awards in the process.

Although Amazon Studios are currently heading into their second season of The Rings of Power, which is set many years before the events of The Hobbit, rights holders Embracer Group were revealed last year to be ready to broker more deals on Tolkien’s works. It would seem that, as expected, Warner Bros. are now looking to push ahead with their piece of the franchise. Responding to the announcement, Jackson, Walsh and Boyes said in a statement:
