Ae Watan Mere Watan, a drama based around India’s freedom struggle, starring Sara Ali Khan, started filming on Monday. The film, which will premiere on Prime Video, is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment.

Karan shared a teaser of the film on his Instagram page as he made the announcement. In the video, Sara can be seen in a white saree. She quietly enters a room, bolts the door pulls the drapes and starts setting up— what seems like— an erstwhile radio. The text in the video indicates that the story is based in Bombay in 1942. “The Britishers think that they have crushed the Quit Indian movement,” she says. “But free voices can’t be caged. This is the voice of Hindustan, from somewhere in Hindustan to someplace in Hindustan.” Suddenly, there are knocks on the door, becoming more and more fervent.

“an ode to the unsung heroes. an ode to India’s freedom struggle. Ae Watan Mere Watan, new Amazon Original Movie – now filming!” Karan captioned the post.

Ae Watan Mere Watan is directed by Kannan Iyer and written jointly by Darab Farooqui and Kannan Iyer.

“The movie is an effort to bring to the audiences a lesser-known chapter of Indian history of the independence struggle. With the incredibly talented Sara Ali Khan taking on a never-seen-before character, and with Kannan Iyer’s vision, this movie promises to be truly inspiring and an entertaining experience,” said Karan in a statement.
