The 81-year-old battle hero of the 1971 Battle of Longewala between India and Pakistan just passed away in Jodhpur. In the 1997 movie Border, actor Suniel Shetty played him.
After the operations headquarters of the 12 Infantry division got a telegraph warning that Pakistan may conduct a coordinated attack at the border outpost on December 3 or 4, 1971, Bhairon Singh, a BSF jawan, caused major fatalities on the Pakistani side.
The death of a BSF combat hero was announced on Twitter by the organization’s official account.
“The Sena Medal winner from the Longewala combat in the 1971 War, Naik (Retd) Bhairon Singh, passed away. The DG BSF and all ranks express their condolences. BSF commends his courageous gallantry and commitment to his service. In these tough circumstances, Prahari Parivar is there for his family. #JaiHind “The tweet stated.
Sharing the BSF tweet, Suniel Shetty wrote, “Rest in Power Naik Bhairon Singh Ji. Heartfelt condolences to the family”.
Suniel Shetty’s portrayal of an army soldier who never tyres of loving his “Bharat Maa” immortalised Singh.
JP Dutta’s ensemble cast movie Border, which was released in 1997 to resounding financial success, had an ensemble cast and featured a number of songs that have become staples of the nation’s Republic Day and Independence Day playlists.
