According to some trustworthy information from Paramount, Mean Girls will be distributed in theatres. The 2004 smash-hit Broadway version will be transformed once more into a musical film. The main cast for the musical has also been revealed by Paramount along with the general revelation. The cast will be led by Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey, while Reneé Rapp will reprise her Broadway Mean Girls role.
The character Cady Heron, played by Lindsay Lohan, is a girl who has recently relocated back to the United States and finds herself pushed into the complicated and messy dynamics of high school. Mean Girls was originally based from Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes. As soon as Cady starts to have feelings for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of head Plastic Regina George, she finds herself drawn into the school’s prominent clique, The Plastics (Rachel McAdams). What initially began as an espionage assignment quickly leads Cady down the road to self-actualization as a full-fledged Plastic.
Regina, who she also played for the Broadway production of Mean Girl, will be represented by Mean Girl musical veteran Rapp. Rapp is a theatrical performer who presently stars in HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls. She has just released her debut EP, Everything to Everyone. Damien, a character created by Daniel Franzese, will be portrayed by Broadway veteran Spivey in the film musical. Spivey gained notoriety most recently for his part in the Grammy-winning musical A Strange Loop.
Tina Fey, who penned the book for the Broadway production as well as the original screenplay, will return to write the writing for the movie musical. With music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin, and directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., she will produce alongside Lorne Michaels.
The movie musical will premiere on Paramount+, however Paramount has not yet said when it will be released.
